VR Training Pilots: Measure Learning and Operational Readiness

Plan a virtual reality training pilot around learning objectives, realistic feedback, accessibility, and assessment outside the simulated session.

VR Training Pilots: Measure Learning and Operational Readiness

VR training is useful only if the experience develops a skill that matters outside the simulation. Start with a specific learning objective, such as identifying the correct sequence for a supervised equipment inspection. Avoid treating headset time as proof of competence.

A practical scenario

A new employee might practice recognizing a fault in a simulated environment. The scenario needs accurate cues and useful feedback, not just visual detail. A subject-matter expert should check the procedure and explain which parts still require supervised real-world practice.

Design the first version

Create a baseline assessment and a comparable post-session assessment. Offer an accessible alternative for participants who cannot comfortably use a headset. Define space, supervision, cleaning, and session-length requirements. Keep the content version aligned with the actual procedure so training does not teach an obsolete workflow.

What to test and measure

Measure retained knowledge, error types, completion barriers, and observed performance in an appropriate follow-up exercise. Review discomfort and dropout separately from learning outcomes. Expand the pilot only when the training team can explain what improved, for whom, and under which conditions.

Questions to resolve before commissioning

  • Which source system owns the facts used in this workflow?
  • Who reviews exceptions and corrects inaccurate output?
  • What baseline and acceptance criteria will determine whether the pilot is useful?
  • What should the user do when a source, tool, or device is unavailable?
