AR vs VR for Business: Choose the Right Customer or Training Experience

Compare augmented and virtual reality by task, device access, asset requirements, user environment, and the business outcome you can measure.

AR vs VR for Business: Choose the Right Customer or Training Experience

Augmented reality adds digital content to the surrounding environment. Virtual reality places the user in a simulated environment. The choice should depend on what the person needs to do, not which technology looks more impressive in a presentation.

A practical scenario

A furniture buyer needs to judge scale in a real room, making AR a plausible fit. A technician rehearsing an uncommon procedure may benefit from a controlled VR environment. In both cases, a conventional 3D viewer or instructional interface may be sufficient and should be considered as a baseline.

Design the first version

Write the user task before commissioning assets. Specify target devices, session length, interaction methods, physical-space needs, and fallback behavior. Budget for asset production and updates as well as application development. An experience tied to a changing catalog needs an asset maintenance process.

What to test and measure

Measure task success, setup friction, completion, and follow-up behavior against the baseline. For training, assess retained knowledge and observed task performance rather than time spent in the headset. For commerce, inspect qualified engagement and buyer questions; immersion alone is not evidence of additional sales.

Questions to resolve before commissioning

  • Which source system owns the facts used in this workflow?
  • Who reviews exceptions and corrects inaccurate output?
  • What baseline and acceptance criteria will determine whether the pilot is useful?
  • What should the user do when a source, tool, or device is unavailable?
